de stelling/FRAMED
@NDSM
TITLE:de stelling/FRAMED
YEAR: 2014-2015
LOCATION: NDSM, Amsterdam
DURATION: 4 months
BUDGET: 10000 euro

The first three episodes of de stelling*/FRAMED on the NDSM work with the themes: Sense of Place, Sense of Identity, Sense of Heritage. The themes are focused on the specific location and our own experiences in politics and public space.
Around the themes stories are connected with each other. These stories are presented in multiple layers. Images and text are supported by a further information on the website. Everyday objects resonate with the art work of local artists.

Parallel to the exhibits there are Socratic conversations led by Karel van Haaften. The results of this coming back again in de stelling/FRAMED.

With each new de stelling/FRAMED is a public viewing and a talk and tour. On the final afternoon there's a film screening: documentaries and episodes of local news station Bellissima TV.

Our collaboration with photographer with Philippe Velez Mc Intyre led to an interesting cross-pollination. Both through its images as his way of presenting.

The ideas of Louis Le Roy play an important role in de stelling/FRAMED. His project the Eko Cathedral is an inspiration and a conceptual approach to the way of making urban space.

* in Dutch the word "stelling" refers both to scaffolding and thesis

LINK Sense of Identity
with Sense of Place we examine how different the meaning of a place can be. For an individual, it may be his life purpose. For a civil servant but a speck in an abstract plan. Yet these realities affect each other. The tragedies that come from that, illustrate fundamental differences in power and status.
Sense of Identity Sense of identity focuses on the distinction between identity and image of a place. Every day we witness how a proposed image affects the real identity or even fights. Confusing concepts such as "the DNA of a place" or statements about the desired "rugged, industrial" character disguise the actual dynamics. We show how that confusion results in a reality that no one has anticipated or desired.
Sense of Heritage focuses on the tradition of protest. Through the re-creation of images and expressions of protest can be seen and felt how over time the sentiment of resistance remains the same. But the positions and issues of struggle change. It shows the courage that you need to resist. The vulnerability which is the consequence. The powerlessness you feel having the correct position at the wrong time or when fighting against the established interests.

 EPISODES  de stelling/FRAMED:
de stelling/FRAMED in de SLANG is created anticipating the evacuation of the 'Snake Pand' in the Spuistraat. We make de stelling/FRAMED on site with the theme "the city as battleground". de stelling/FRAMED in de SLANG is part of the public domain and gets a lot of international visitors. Often tourists. They are looking for the 'real' Amsterdam and recognize here something authentic. Now, a year later, the 'Snake Pand' is evicted and demolished and the construction of apartments has begun. The increasing pressure of tourism on Amsterdam is a hot topic in the public debate.

For the Architecture Day we make an episode about the NDSM City as a battleground . The topic of the day of the architecture are the IJ riverbanks. Especially the city planning development of the last 30 years. In de stelling /FRAMED we show the long history of working class emancipation and resistance. The history of the NDSM also be read as the story of globalization. First, a national company with local roots. Now the place of international investors. Involvement in the place for them is an abstraction. Nevertheless this commitment is required for the NDSM to remain special. Unforeseen indifference is the price paid for globalization.
