Instituto Buena Bista is an art education institute on the former Dutch colony of Curacao. Although Curacao now has the status of an independent country in the kingdom of the Netherlands, the influence of former domination is still there. Nobody really speaks their mind, silence is survival. This strategy creates a stifling atmosphere of gossip and innuendo. In collaboration with the students of Instituto Buena Bista, we make an inventory of the problems in Curacao. With the results, we make a design for a parade. The idea is to bring the problems in the open in a theatrical way.
The process of creation is participatory. The concept and the contour come from us, then it is up to the students. Through a step by step curriculum, they make the objects and performance. The direction and guidance are intensive, but not mandatory. It gives the students confidence and helps them making decisions.
The resulting objects and costumes are silent procession carried through downtown Willemstad. This political counterpart of the exuberant carnival is received with wonder and meets with approval. The media devote considerable attention to the phenomenon.
We have a great time.
