werkplan:

In the summer of 2016 have David Bade and Tirzo Martha with their institution IBB a major exhibition in the Kunsthal. Part of the exhibition is a participatory program with schools and community groups. TENT Rotterdam signed a three-year partnership with the Rotterdam Summer Carnival. The arrival of IBB at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam seemed a good opportunity to enter into a partnership.
From both institutes, KUNSTHAL & IBB and TENT, an artist is invited. From the Kunsthal & IBB these are Bart Stuart and Klaar van der Lippe. From TENT this is Mette Sterre. Mette Star has the theme 'futuristic plants', Bart and Klaar work with the theme 'a COLLECTIVE BODY.

Through interviews with, among others cultural anthropologist Artwell Cain we come to the conclusion that the Rotterdam Summer Carnival is not so much a carnival party, with all the 'inverted world' connotations that come with it. It has more the character of a cultural presentation. You show yourself as a not dominant culture. At your best, your prettiest and your most distinctive. It explains perfectly why the summer carnival lacks any political expression. While there is every reason with the political regime of nationalist party Liveable Rotterdam. The choice of the traditional and often cliché moderate costumes is suddenly makes sense. It's not about being outrageous, but about the right one day a year to be normal .

The phenomenon of "cultural appropriation", the use of cultural expressions of "others" by the dominant culture, is a pitfall. Could you once carefree dress up as an Indian in native dress, now this is subject to debate. "acting Caribbean" is not cool, just an expression of coloniality.
Sensitivity to the past and humility with regard to the role in the parade are therefore the guidelines in developing the concept. It involves taking your role in the parade with sensitivity to your place in it. Precisely because we are subsidized and representative of the "cultural elite".
So, if the summer carnival is presentation of cultures we present ourselves as well as a culture: the creators.
We will form a collective body formed by all individual expressions.
We are dressed as ourselves in our common cultural referent: the drawing.
The corresponding float will show the creative process: acted out live by David Bade and Tirzo Martha.

In the workshops we work with mentally disabled actors from Maatwerk. We also make costumes and have parade. We have a great time..
